The Westminster attacker has been named as 52-year-old Khalid Masood, who had a range of previous convictions. While he was born in Kent, detectives believe he had been living most recently in the West Midlands. Police said he had been "known by a number of aliases". In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said there was "no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack" Massod "was not the subject of any current investigations". Nevertheless, "he was known to police and has a range of previous convictions for assaults, including GBH, possession of offensive weapons and public order offences". The statement added: "His first conviction was in November 1983 for criminal damage and his last conviction was in December 2003 for possession of a knife.

UPDATE: London attacker identified as Khalid Masood, police
British police have identified Khalid Masood as the man behind the London attack.
The 52-year-old was born in Kent and had been living in central England. He was known to police and has a range of previous convictions.
Although there was no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack, the so-called Islamic State group claimed responsibility.
It comes as the investigation gathers pace, with a string of arrests in raids around London and Birmingham.
"It is still our belief, which continues to be borne out by our investigation, that this attacker acted alone and was inspired by international terrorism. Clearly the investigation is ongoing and developing all the time and we continue to focus on his motivation, his preparation and his associates," said Head of UK Counter Terrorism, Mark Rowley.
Prior to #WestminsterAttack Masood,52, was not subject of any current investigations & no intel about his intent to mount a terrorist attack- Metropolitan Police (@metpoliceuk) March 23, 2017
According to a statement by the prime minister, the attacker was a "peripheral figure, not part of the current intelligence picture".
The attack which saw a car ploughing into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, before the attacker stabbed a policeman as he tried to enter Parliament, is the deadliest assault on the capital in twelve years.
The car which ploughed into pedestrians on Westminster bridge, has been confirmed as a rental from a company based in Birmingham. "An employee identified the vehicle after seeing the licence plate in an image online. We ran another check to verify, and immediately contacted the authorities. We are co-operating fully with the authorities and will provide any assistance that we can to the investigation," said a spokesperson for Enterprise.

London attacker: 'He was a normal family man', neighbour
The man who killed three people in an attack near Parliament in London has been named as Khalid Masood.
The British-born 52-year-old was known to the police for a range of previous convictions for assault, but was not the subject of any current investigations.
Born in Kent, his most recent address was in the West Midlands. Police raided one home in Birmingham, where a woman who says she was his neighbour said he lived for about five months, before he abruptly left just after Christmas.
"So he was a normal family man he used to take the child to school in the morning, taking care of his garden outside. I saw him many times cutting the grass and coming back from shopping."
The police will be piecing together the evolution of a man, convicted of grievous bodily harm and possession of offensive weapons, to someone who mounted a terror attack claimed by the so-called Islamic State.
Although the police believe he was acting alone, a series of raids was carried at six locations across London and Birmingham and eight arrests have been made.
ISIL has been threatening to attack London for 18 months. In a video message in which it claimed the Paris attacks, ISIL warned that the British capital was its next target.
Wednesday's attack was the deadliest in the country since 2005, when 52 people were killed by Islamist killers.

Who was Khalid Masood?
Before he killed four people in the UK's deadliest attack since the 2005 London bombings, intelligence officers considered Khalid Masood to be a petty criminal who posed little serious threat
The British-born convert to Islam had shown up on the periphery of previous terrorism investigations led by MI5.
However, the 52-year-old was not under investigation when he carried out Wednesday's attack in central London.
Born 25.12.64 in Kent
Birth name Adrian Russell Ajao
Lived most recently in Birmingham
Reportedly had 3 children
A string of convictions for petty offences
"Our working assumption is that he was inspired by international terrorism," Metropolitan Police Assistant Deputy Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters.

The Saudi connection
The Saudi Arabian embassy in London says Masood had spent time working in the kingdom but did not come to the attention of the security services there.
He was there for two one-year periods, from November 2005 and April 2008, when he worked as an English teacher.
He also visited briefly in March 2015.

What do we know about his motivation?
Not much. ISIL claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attack in Westminster.
However, it is unclear what links - if any - Masood had with the self-titled group.
Police say there was no prior intelligence about his intent to mount an attack.
Does Masood fit the profile of a militant attacker?
Counter-terrorism officers say, at the age of 52, Masood does not exactly fit the profile of militant attackers.
The majority are typically under 30.
According to Shashank Joshi, a Senior Research Fellow at London's Royal United Services Institute, an MI5 report based on the study of several hundred British extremists found that half were born in the UK.
Few were raised in very religious households and many, like Masood, were converts.
"Masood is not atypical in being a British-born convert with a criminal record. He was slightly more unusual in being older, but we do not know how long ago he was radicalised," Joshi says."If it was in prison, this would be a common pathway. Given the diversity of Islamist extremists, Masood does not look too unusual.""Masood recorded on his CV that he had taught English in Saudi Arabia in 2005 and returned to the UK in 2009" https://t.co/HeFFyOBsSP- Shashank Joshi (@shashj) 24 mars 2017
The Birmingham connection
Masood hired the car he used in Wednesday's attack in Birmingham.
He may have rented an apartment in the city, which was one of several raided by police on Wednesday night.
According to a study by the Henry Jackson think-tank earlier this month, 39 of the 269 people convicted in the UK of terrorism offences from 1998 to 2015 came from Birmingham.
There are over 213,000 Muslims in Birmingham, more than a fifth of the population according to the 2011 census.
There has been growing concern about social divisions in the midland city.

Hero MPs get honour
The MP who tried to resuscitate the police officer fatally stabbed in Wednesday's attack has been honoured by the Queen.
British foreign affairs minister Tobias Ellwood could be seen with blood on his face and hands as he stood in the crowd surrounding PC Keith Palmer outside the Houses of Commons.
Downing Street says Ellwood and security minister Ben Wallace, who helped coordinate the government's response to Wednesday's attack, were appointed to the Privy Council in recognition for their response to the attack.
The group has advised the monarch since the Norman era and is made up of politicians, judges and bishops.

What they are saying
"Our investigation focuses on understanding his motivation, his operation and his associates," - the UK's senior counter-terrorism police officer, Mark Rowley."An act of terrorism tried to silence our democracy, he took out his rage indiscriminately," Prime Minister Theresa May told parliament."Nothing in his demeanour or his looks would have given me any thoughts that would make me think he was anything but normal," Michael Petersen was a fellow guest at a hotel in Brighton where Masood spent Tuesday night before the attack.

Shoplifter calls 911 after getting trapped
A shoplifting suspect got more than she bargained for when she found herself trapped inside a local department store after closing time, and was forced to call 911 for help.
Police say 35-year-old Joanne Havens thought she had outwitted employees at the Kohl's department store outside of Kent, by hiding in a changing room at closing time.
Havens is shown on video stealing various items, but when she tried to leave, she discovered that all of the exit doors were locked.
When she realized she was trapped, Havens called 911, not realizing that police were already on their way to the store because of the alarms she set off inside.

Woman Shot During Counter-Terror Raid on London Home
Armed officers shot one woman and arrested four others in a counter-terrorism raid on a home along Harlesden Road in London on April 27, according to Metropolitan Police. The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that the woman was the subject of a counter-terrorism investigation and was being held under guard at hospital, but had not been arrested due to her condition.
Four others were arrested in the raid on suspicion of the "commission, preparation and instigation of terrorist acts". The Met said: "The first, a 20-year-old man was arrested near to the address. A male aged 16 and woman aged 20 were arrested at the address. A 43-year-old woman was arrested in Kent a short while later."
The Met Police said the incident was not connected to an arrest in Whitehall earlier in the day, as some social media users had speculated.

London: woman shot by police in anti-terror raid
A woman in her 20s has been shot by police in an anti-terror operation in London. She is in a serious, but stable condition in hospital.
It happened as officers raided a house in the north-west of the city.
In a statement, police said an armed entry to the house was "necessary due to the nature of the intelligence that we were dealing with."
Six people have been arrested as part of the investigation in all, five at or near the property - and one in Kent, in southeast England.
They have been detained on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of terrorist acts.
Police say the six arrests are not connected to a separate incident in London on Thursday, when a man carrying knives was detained near the Prime Minister's office.
The 27-year-old, reportedly on the intelligence radar, is suspected of preparing an act of terrorism.
"Given the horrors in London of a few short weeks ago and, may I say, our thoughts are still with the victims and survivors of that horrific day, I wanted to reassure the public that this increased level of terrorist activity is being matched by our action, the police and security services across the country, and we are making arrests on a near daily basis. You saw some of that yesterday," said Neil Basu, Deputy Assistant Commissioner at London's Metropolitan Police.
It was just over a month ago that a British-born convert to Islam ploughed a car into pedestrians on Westminster bridge, killing four, before stabbing a police officer to death. The attacker was shot dead at the scene.
